About the Art

Art should create an experience, not just an image.
I want the viewer to do more than stand in front of a piece and look at it. I want them to move, question it, interact with it, dance with it and ideally experience something they haven’t experienced before.
That philosophy pushes me to work outside traditional materials and techniques. I’m constantly experimenting with lenses, reflections, color, light, texture, and movement to see how far I can push the viewer’s perception.
Most of my artwork literally transforms and changes depending on where you’re standing, so the viewer becomes part of the artwork. The three-dimensional movement and effects that my art creates cannot be photographed or recorded from a single vantage point, so it forces a physical presence to experience it the way it was made to be experienced.
The Orb project is made from a special lens that took me years to alter and develop. The lens is totally flat which is the crazier part, because even when you look at it, it seems like it would be convex or concave. The effect is created by grooves that bend light in such a way that you not only can see through it, but the various layers of mirror and coloring I put behind the lens are what project forward back at you into a spherical shape, creating the illusion that a ball of light is floating in front of the canvas, even though there is nothing physically there, other than a bent frequency your eye is sophisticated enough to interpret.
That moment when someone interacts and instinctively reaches out to touch it is really what the work is about for me.
